The shiro and misir wot was pretty good and flavorful! Way better than the Ethiopian restaurant down the street (Abyssinian). Would have given it 5 stars if not for the cockroach I saw crawling on the floor.
I’ve been to this restaurant a handful of times, as I love Ethiopian food and would have it every day if I could. Luckily, Denver has a good selection of Ethiopian places on or near Colfax and I’ve frequented all of them over the past few years with mostly very pleasant experiences.
With that being said, Axum is solidly in the middle of the pack. They don’t do anything spectacular but they don’t drop the ball either. Their prices are in-line with the other places as well, so no issues there. The food is always prepared well and tastes very good, but again, there’s nothing really that separates them from the pack to make me want to eat there any more than the other Ethiopian places.
The 4-star rating encompasses more of my love of the cuisine than a reflection of the restaurant itself. If Axum was the only Ethiopian place in Denver, I’d eat there every few months, be blissfully happy, and give them 5 stars. However, since there are others in the area that I enjoy slightly more, they rate a 4 in my book.
Tasty food compensates for indifferent service. Hope they will provide separate plates for vegetarians in a group and not serve both veg and non-veg in the same plate, for mulitple people's orders. Also a finger bowl to wash fingers would be nice to have when we ask for the bill. But would go again!
Beautiful dining experience, and delicious food definitely worth the wait, staff are kinda and helpful and the menu is extensive. 10/10 will go again.
This is really delicious Ethiopian cuisine. Eating with our hands was fun, everything we have tried has been really tasty- especially their house honey- Ethiopian wine ?❤️
Great food, good service. We had chicken, beef and lamb. I don't and have never liked lamb. I ate more lamb today than in my whole life. The flavor was terrific very tender and seasoned so well.
AMAZING veg options, be sure to get the carrot/bean one as well as the cabbage/potato options. So flavorful and affordable. The coffee at the end of dinner was a nice touch.
I love Ethiopian food and try to get it whenever I can. This place is definitely one of my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in terms of the food. However the server did not really know anything about the menus. For instance I asked if I could get instead of two and Jerry plates for the both of us if we can get our stuff On one big Injera platter she said “sometimes we don’t know”. How do you not know what you serve? I Believe that it is a big part of the experience to eat a vegetarian platter on the same injera with another person when eating Ethiopian. When I first went to the restaurant I also asked if she had cardamom tea She looked very frazzled I couldn’t even understand what she said and then I asked could you repeat and she said let me go check. Well she want to check and came back about 10 minutes later and then asked if we were ready to order as if we didn’t just ask a question.
Don't like the neighborhood but the food is worth it! We drive quite a distance to get there, but we've still been at least a dozen times.
The good here was scrumptious and made with care, while the service was formal and polite. A generous atmosphere, well-priced establishment
