Trivia

  • 🇪🇸 Mission Concepción was originally established in East Texas as Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de los Hainais, but was relocated to San Antonio in 1731 along with other missions to escape the threat of French invasion from Louisiana.
  • 🙏 Mission Concepción was dedicated in 1755 and named after Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of Spain. The mission served as a center of religious, cultural, and social life for the native people who lived there, mostly Coahuiltecans who spoke a common language.
  • 🎨 Mission Concepción was decorated with colorful frescoes both inside and outside, some of which are still visible today. The frescoes were painted by native artists under the guidance of the friars and featured geometric patterns, floral motifs, religious symbols, and inscriptions.
  • ⚔️ Mission Concepción was the site of the Battle of Concepción in 1835, one of the first major engagements of the Texas Revolution. A group of Texian insurgents led by James Bowie and James Fannin fought against Mexican troops under Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea and won a decisive victory.
  • ☀️ Mission Concepción is known for its annual double solar illumination event that occurs every year on or around August 15, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. The event happens when the sun aligns with the western entrance of the church and illuminates a fresco on the opposite wall.
  • 🕍 Mission Concepción consists of a church, a convento (residence for the friars), a granary, and other structures. The church has a cruciform plan with a dome over the crossing and two bell towers at the facade. The convento has several rooms that display original frescoes and artifacts.
  • 🌟 Mission Concepción has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark since 1970 and as a World Heritage Site since 2015. It is one of the best-preserved examples of Spanish mission architecture in America and a testament to the cultural heritage of Texas.
  • 🎁 Mission Concepción offers guided tours, self-guided tours, cell phone tours, and audio tours for visitors who want to learn more about its history and significance. The mission also hosts various events throughout the year, such as concerts, lectures, festivals, and ceremonies.
  • 🌱 Mission Concepción is committed to preserving its natural and cultural resources and educating the public about its legacy. The mission works with various partners and volunteers to maintain its buildings, grounds, gardens, and trails. The mission also offers educational programs for schools and groups.
