The Madame C.J. Walker Legacy Center is a historic venue for diverse performances in Indianapolis, IN. Founded by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center (NAAMCC), the center offers jazz concerts, comedy tours, art exhibitions and more in this restored National Historic Landmark.
The Center was built in 1910 by Madame C.J. Walker and her husband Alexander Dunlop as their personal residence. In 1916, they sold it to Dr. Benjamin Tompkins and his wife Cora Williams Tompkins, who lived there until 1930 when they sold it to Dr. William H. Scott and his wife Annie Hale Scott. French who lived here until 1942 when they sold it to Mr. & Mrs Lewis A Shoemake who lived here until 1976 when they sold it to Mr & Mrs James B McAdams who still own the home today!
The building was designed by architect John W Bassett in the Colonial Revival style with Craftsman influences that was popular at the time of its construction in 1910-1911."
The Center has hosted some of the most notable artists in history including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and many more.
