ABOUT

The International Church of Cannabis is a religious organization in Denver that uses cannabis as a sacrament. Members claim the use of cannabis helps elevate people to a higher understanding of self. The chapel headquarters, a converted old church painted by contemporary artists, opened its doors on April 20, 2017.

The church was founded by James M. McCartney, who says he was inspired by his own religious experiences while using cannabis. He says he believes in "the healing power of marijuana."

McCartney and his wife met at the University of Colorado Boulder's student ministry where they served together and eventually married before they both moved to Denver where they started their own ministry under the name The 420 Church which later merged into The International Church of Cannabis (ICOC).

They have been hosting a series of events at their new location including weddings for members such as those who were married earlier this year during their "Cannabis Communion" service which included anointing them with cannabis oil before having them share some during their first kiss as husband and wife; another event included hosting an Easter egg hunt for kids with prizes including lollipops made out of hash oil!
